When a light fitting or switch needs replacing

A pendant that flickers, a dimmer that buzzes or a cracked switch is ready for a replacement on the circuit you already have.

  • A light that has goneThe bulb is new but the fitting is dead, cracked or hanging from the rose.
  • A dimmer that buzzes or tripsThe slider hums, the LEDs flicker or the dimmer trips the board when you turn it down.
  • A switch that is loose or crackedThe rocker is broken, the plate is loose on the wall or the switch is live when it should be off.

  • Arrival and isolationThe lighting circuit is identified at the board and isolated so the old fitting or switch can come off.
  • The swapThe new fitting, dimmer or switch is connected to the existing conductors, with each core in a tight terminal.

Light fitting and switch replacement questions

Still have a question?

How much does a light fitting replacement cost?

Replacement of a light fitting, dimmer or switch starts at £50 with TMB Electrics. That figure is for one part on the cables already in the ceiling or wall. A second fitting or a new back box is added to the written price before the old part comes off.

Can you fit a light I have already bought?

Yes, TMB Electrics fits a pendant or switch you already own at the same £50 starting price. The new part has to match the wiring and the load on that circuit. A mismatch is explained while the old fitting is still up.

Do I need a certificate to change a light switch?

TMB Electrics issues a minor works record when a small change needs paperwork. Minor works certification starts at £80. A new lighting circuit is priced as rewiring, not as a fitting swap.

Will the power go off in the whole house?

TMB Electrics isolates the lighting circuit for that fitting or switch at the fuse board. Other circuits stay on unless they share that fuse. Power comes back once the new part has been tested.

Can a buzzing dimmer become a normal switch?

Yes, a dimmer can come out and a standard plate switch can go on the same cables. LED lamps that flicker on an old dimmer can run on a plain on and off switch. TMB Electrics tests the new switch on that circuit before leaving.
