Electric showers and their circuits
An electric shower is the biggest single load in most homes. The cable, the breaker and the isolator switch all have to match the shower's rating.
- Replacing a showerA new shower is often more powerful than the old one, so the circuit has to be checked before it is connected.
- A first electric showerNeeds its own circuit from the fuse board, a pull cord in the bathroom and an isolator.
- Bathrooms and rulesElectrical work in a bathroom is notifiable, so the job comes with a certificate.
What happens on the day
A replacement on a suitable circuit takes a couple of hours.
- Check the circuitThe cable size, breaker and RCD are checked against the new shower.
- Connect the showerThe unit is connected, the isolator fitted or checked, and the water side confirmed.
- Test and certifyThe circuit is tested under load and the certificate issued.

WhatsAppHow much does it cost to fit an electric shower?
From £220 for the electrical work on a like for like replacement. A new circuit is quoted separately.
Can I replace my shower with a more powerful one?
Only if the cable and breaker can support it. TMB Electrics checks this first because a 9.5kW shower often needs a larger cable than an older 7.5kW unit.
Do I need an electrician to change an electric shower?
Yes. It is bathroom electrical work, which has to be done by a competent person and certified.
